Our History

Mission Statement
To advance gender equality for women and girls through research, education and advocacy.

What We Do: AAUW has been empowering women as individuals and as a community since 1881. We have worked together as a national grassroots organization to improve the lives of millions of women and their families.

About Us: North Hills Pittsburgh Branch History and Activities

Our local branch was chartered in November of 1970. The 33 charter members initiated many branch activities supporting education, legislation, international relations, cultural events and our community. We will be celebrating the 100th birthday of the passage of the 19th amendment, giving women the right to vote, and our branch’s 50th birthday, in 2020.

Today’s branch continues to advocate for girls and women. We hold a public Equal Pay Day awareness event each April. We present a Gateway to Equity award yearly to a local group or individual supporting women’s equity. The branch funds the Sister Matilda Kelly AAUW Incentive Grant given yearly to a non-traditional female student at LaRoche University.

Additionally, our branch supports our local community. We support the annual North Hills International Day of Peace Festival and the Martin Luther King Jr. Unity Breakfast. For many years we have run a public discussion group on world affairs using the Foreign Policy Association Program Great Decisions. Our branch presented several programs on local women in politics and recently hosted a community awareness program on gerrymandering. Members also participate with the League of Women Voters in voter registration events, some at new citizen naturalization ceremonies.

There are several social groups available to members:
• Book clubs, one morning and one evening
• Morning bridge group
• IPODS (In Place of Dinner Social) – food centered socials for members with or without spouses
• The Lunch Bunch – once a month lunch group exploring restaurants in the greater Pittsburgh area.
